Chapter thirteen

She woke up, still dressed. Outside, a few stars pricked the inky sky.

Eve rubbed her eyes. It was much too early to tiptoe downstairs and start the coffeemaker. Its loud rumbles might disturb her dad and Crystal.

She stared at the radio manuscripts. She needed a large dose of caffeine if she wanted her brain to function.

Her hand hovered over her phone. England time was eight hours ahead of hers. She should call her boyfriend, to let him know that everything chez Holdsworth was simply peachy, hunkey-dorey, nay, excellent.

Then again, she didn’t want to lie to him.

She settled on a compromise and sent a text that she was unexpectedly busy, couldn’t wait to bring home some amazing Halloween decorations, and that she missed him. A dozen emojis dotted her message.

O’Malley jumped onto the bed. She’d tried closing the door in the beginning. He had not taken it kindly. His claws had left a deep scratch in the varnish.

Eve took her notepad. She could do with a springboard for her thoughts, and she knew exactly the right kind of levelheaded, smart, and detached person for the job.

As luck would have it, Eve’s indecently early morning meant that her friend and occasional sleuthing sidekick Hayley should at this very moment be enjoying a break from her duties as pub owner and manager.

Eve decided to forego any chitchat. “I need your help with a murder.”

Hayley laughed. “Plan one or get rid of the body? I thought you decided you liked Crystal after all.”

“I do, and it’s not that. My dad stumbled over a corpse, and I don’t want him to be branded as a killer.”

She recounted the facts as far as she knew them.

Hayley whistled through her teeth. “How do these things keep happening to you? Are you related to Miss Marple or Jessica Fletcher, by any chance?”

“Very funny. The problem is, that basically everyone could be a suspect, either for something Frank said or something he might have been about to say.” Eve raked her fingers through her hair.

“What about the blackmailer?” Hayley asked. “Why don’t you start there?”

“What do you mean?”

“It's simple. What did they stand to gain from making Frank slander and malign the people who used to be his friends? If you know why the man was shot, you know who did it.”

“That’s smart.”

Hayley warmed to her theme. “Maybe the goal had already been achieved, with one of the targets, and Frank was no longer needed. Or he came dangerously close to figuring out whatever sinister plot the blackmailer had hatched. Or the killer was after replacing Frank. If he’d balked, he might have given back the radio licence, for someone else to take over. Or if he’d spread enough nasty stuff over the airwaves, a long list of complaints might have ensured that the powers that be shut down his show. You could ask your police officer mate.”

Eve scribbled note after note.

“One more thought,” Hayley said.

“Yes?”

“How many of the accusations were true?”

“You’re right,” Eve said. “If only one
